Whereas the medical and social political aspects of smoking have been under discussion for a long time, the ethical issues involved have hitherto been largely ignored. Nevertheless, the emotionally charged issue of smoking is not handled for its own sake, but serves merely as the springboard for a methodical exploration of the contours and structures of a religious theme which until very recently has escaped academic scrutiny.
